N ational Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, a landmark initiative of the Government was introduced in 2005, with an objective to enhance the livelihood security of the households in rural areas of the country. NIC, along with Ministry of Rural Development and other stakeholders, conceptualised a web based information system “NREGASoft” to address the planning & monitoring needs of the Scheme. The Lead Story this month highlights the features & functionality of the software along with the manner in which the department is leveraging on the benefits accrued from the software.
State Governance Section, this time highlights the innovative e-governance initiatives by Himachal Pradesh in all facets of governance right from Legislative, Executive to Judiciary. Also highlighted are the various initiatives in different sectors of development by the state of Bihar on its journey towards good governance. ICT initiatives in East Singhbum District of Jharkhand, Thrissur District of Kerala and Nawansahr in Punjab have also been discussed in this issue.
In an emerging technology paradigm, Open Source GIS software has been instrumental and emerged as one powerful tool for managing, analysing and decision making, by seamlessly combining both spatial and non-spatial data.
