Ports, specially, Sea Ports are one of the cornerstones for the economic development for the country. Around 96 percent by volume and 70% by value of our country's international trade is carried out through maritime transport. Due to globalisation of economy and liberalisation of the market, competition in the port business has been increasing significantly resulting in requirements for more efficient & effective Port Operations management.

The Enterprise Sea Port Operations Management (iSPOMS), an enterprise product developed and implemented by NIC/NICSI, is a pre- requisite for the growth of the port organisation as well as for meeting demands from trade community and government. The implementation of e-Governance policy for trade and industry in India is shifting the business transactions from batch orientation to online and real time, resulting in demands for a standard- based integrated system with the ability to interconnect with the other available port sub-systems in a cost effective manner. NIC/NICSI has acquired significant domain knowledge in ICT for port operations management and spent more than 1200 man-month manpower in last 10 years in this domain. The result is the product iSPOMS that is capable to satisfy these demands leveraging the country-wide strong presence of NIC/NICSI.
Some of the trends and diversities for port industry in Indian environment are from in-house to out-sourcing and landlord form of business operations, trend in increase in container and containerised cargo handling, demand for more economic, efficient and transparent port operations, implementation of Port Community System (PCS) to meet the demand of the port business community, meeting the regularity requirements of the Government and Customs, in particular.
The iSPOMS, an ERP product from National Informatics Centre, is a cost effective and proven solution for medium and major ports for meeting the requirement of an ePort in the B2B & B2G segmanet of eGovernance. This product would also be equally suitable for CFS (Container Freight Stations) located throughout the country.
The software is based on open-source platform, flexible and easy to integrate with other existing sub- systems with the standard-based integration technologies. Facilitated by portable wireless interfaces, the product has the potential for further enhancement and it may be transformed into a product of international standard.
