The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has entrusted the National Informatics Centre with developing a system for on-line monitoring of construction of about 100 of their storage godowns. The construction of these godowns has been envisaged in the national Eighth Five Year Plan to generate an additional storage capacity of 10 lakh with a financial outlay of approximately Rs 100 crore. The system, which is to be developed on a turn-key basis, will cost Rs 11.09 lakh, and is to be implemented within a period of six months. System development is underway, and will be completed very shortly. The plan is to initially monitor 15 sites in which construction is underway. The data from these sites, as changed activities, will be transmitted through NICNET from NIC district and state centres to the FCI Headquarters. Using the system developed, the data will then be processed to generate reports for all levels of monitoring agencies. For the monitoring phase, all concerned with monitoring will be provided appropriate training and training material.
