National Portal of India is NOW Universally Accessible india.gov.in on its quest of establishing quality, time and again has delivered another thoughtful perspective to the practice of providing information through the websites. National Portal of India in its endeavor to ensure Universal Accessibility published its Accessibility Statement, which strengthens the commitment of accessibility to all its users irrespective of device in use, technology or ability. This Portal is revised to meet priority 2 (level AA) of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 laid down by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The various domains of accessibility to cater for are visual, motor ability, auditory, seizures and cognitive. india.gov.in has embedded measures to cover maximum areas in relation to the above domains. A preview on the website accessibility features implemented in the National Portal of India is provided below: Ø Accessibility Options: Options to change the size of the text and set a color scheme are provided. For example, if you are using a mobile device to access this Portal, the text might appear smaller on the screen that makes it difficult to read. In such a situation, this option can be used to increase the size of the text for clear visibility and better readability. Similarly change of contrast option is made available for users with color blindness. Ø Table Headers: The table headings are marked and associated with their corresponding cells in each row. For example, if there are 30 rows and 5 columns in a table, it is difficult for a user with visual disability to identify which data cell belongs to which header. In this situation, an assistive device such as a screen reader can read the column header of any cell for the user. In addition, captions are also specified for each table that act as labels and indicate what data is provided in the table. Ø Alternate Text: Brief description of all non-text elements are provided for users with visual disability. If in case the user is using a browser that supports only text or the image display is disabled, the user can still know what the image is all about by reading the alternate text in absence of an image. Ø Explicit Form Label Association: A label is linked to its respective control, such as text box, check box, radio button, and drop-down list. This enables the assistive devices to identify the labels for the controls on a form. Ø Keyboard Support: The Portal can be browsed using a keyboard by pressing the Tab and Shift + Tab keys, thereby, enabling access by people with challenges on motor ability. The content available through india.gov.in is written in plain language and is organized using appropriate headings and subheadings that provide a readable structure. Expert and novice users who are visually challenged were invited during the inauguration of the workshop on Centre of Excellence for e-Governance which was inaugurated by Sh. A. Raja, Honorable Minister of Communication and I.T. and Sh. Jyotiraditya Scindia, Honorable Minister of State on 17th February 2009. As a part of the commitment, the team of National Portal of India is presently working on making the Hindi version bharat.gov.in accessible.
