Nawanshahr is fast emerging as one of the most economically developed district of the country.

Formerly known as "Nausar", this tiny sleepy town of Punjab acquired the name as “Nawanshahar” with the passage of time to later emerge into a district headquarters. Carved out of Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar districts on November 7, 1995 as the 16th district of Punjab State, it has the proud privilege of having under its jurisdiction the historical village of “KHATKAR KALAN”, famous for patriots and freedom fighters like Sardar Kishan Singh, Sardar Ajit Singh, Sardar Swaran Singh, Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh.

Ever since the establishment of NIC District Centre in Nawanshahr in the year 2000, the district has made its presence felt with the implementation of various ICT projects. NIC has been instrumental in bringing IT awareness in the District by deploying required ICT infrastructure initially and by providing training to the district officials of different departments/braches. The district has now established excellent ICT infrastructure with state of the art SUWIDHA centre having 33 counters for delivery of services and has implemented various e-governance initiatives of the state.

Some of the major projects handled by NIC Nawanshahr are:

— SUWIDHA (Single User- friendly Window Disposal & Helpline for Applicants): This single point citizen interface for receipt of applications and delivery of services has been one of the pioneer applications implemented in Nawanshahr. It provides various services like Birth & Death Certificate, SC/BC Certificate, Form Filling, arm licenses, electricity bills for PSEB, Passport, Ration Card etc.

— iTISP (Integrated Treasuries Information System of Punjab): Treasury Information System with the objective for automation of Treasury work is operational at district treasuries of Nawanshahr.

— SMS-based Interface for Status Dissemination: Nawanshahr is one of the few districts in Punjab that has implemented SMS-based Interface for Status Dissemination of any application submitted for any kind of service at SUWIDHA counter.

— PRISM (Property Registration Information System Module): The state wide project for bringing transparency in the registration work has been extended at Nawanshahr and Balachaur Tehsils as well as at Banga sub tehsil.

— e-Kiosk: A touch-screen based system, e-Kiosk, has been established in the district HQs to disseminate important information to citizens such as status of application, various development and health schemes, Bus/Train timetable etc.

— Marriage Registration (MAREG): The entire marriage registration process under Hindu Marriage Act in the district has been automated with the deployment of MAREG which facilitates in capturing the details and photographs and generation of newspaper notice apart from generating host of MIS reports.

— Affidavit Attestation System (AAS): AAS is a popular IT application among the citizens that is used for the attestation of affidavits. The photograph of the deponent, reason of affidavit and other details are captured and printed on the backside of the affidavit.

— DISE (District Information System for Elections): DISE, a centralised state level solution for functionalities such as for making parties, assigning booths to the parties etc, strictly in accordance with the guidelines of the Election Commission to handle election process, has been successfully put into service in all the elections.

— Diary and Dispatch Monitoring System (DDMS): For the internal office automation, DDMS has been implemented at DC office in order to track receipt & dispatch of snail mail. It has resulted in better monitoring of the inward as well as outward memos/letters.

— Reference Monitoring System (RMS): The receipt and monitoring of various types pf grievances and references received by the district administration, has been automated with RMS.

— Other Important District Applications: Other important district level applications like SSIS (Social Security Information System), ALIS (Arms License Issuance System), CIS (Certificate Issuance System), BDIS (Birth & Death Certificate) etc have been implemented to provide hassle-free services to the citizens.

— Web Presence: Nawanshahr has its presence on the web having its official website (http://nawanshahr.nic.in) with host of features and has dynamic contents of SUWIDHA application status dissemination, social security pensioners' status, election results etc in addition to static information.

— Video Conferencing (VC) / NICNET / Internet E- mail / Trainings: VC has been established in the district through 2 MBPS leased line. NICNET facility has been provided through LAN to DC office. NIC has conducted a number of training programs for officials of various departments on email/internet and on application software.

— Central Projects: Central Projects like VAHAN (Registration of vehicles), SARTHI (Issuance of driving licenses), CONFONET (District Consumer Forum), CIPA (Police Department), NREGA (Rural Development), IDSP (Civil Surgeon Office), Agmarknet (District Mandi Office) etc have been implemented in other offices.

Nawanshahr, notwithstanding being a new district, has emerged forerunner among districts of Punjab in making e-governance a reality due of the keenness of administrators and acceptability of the people. Keeping this pace up, this new generation district is certain to achieve excellence in providing top quality services to the citizens.
