NEW DELHI, August: The Minister of State for Personnel and Training Ms Margaret Alva informed the Rajya Sabha on August 20, 1992 that National Informatics Centre had been entrusted with the responsibility of installing an electronic examination system for the civil services examination. NIC will try the mechanism with an internal mechanism in November this year. The Minister further said the essential thing was to establish credibility in the examination system as this had been eroded to some extent because of reports of leakages of question papers. She informed that the Prime Minister had suggested the introduction of the electronic system to ensure secrecy in the examination process. The Union Public Service Commission had expressed its desire to take full advantage of the up-to-date technology available to modernize the civil services examination, and ensure confidentiality and secrecy in the examination system. A working group in the Ministry is preoccupied with the work, and was also examining how best the existing centres of NIC could be used. Test runs have been made, she said.
