The National Informatics Centre has been entrusted with the responsibility of providing technical and infrastructural support to the Special Relief Organization, Government of Orissa, for the project "On-line Flood Information Service" (OFIS). The objectives of OFIS is not only to meet requirements concerning correct and timely information flow, but also help promote higher objectives such as resource sharing, association, standardization, automation and ultimate integration, of information for the concerned organizations.
Currently OFIS is taking care of the management of flood hazards related with the Mahanadi basin which happens to be the biggest and the highest damage causing river basin in the whole state.
OFIS NETWORK
The OFIS network connects all the organizational entities such as Special Relief Organization; Flood Control Room; Indian Meteorological Department, through NICNET, to NIC's computer centre located at Bhubaneshwar.
OFIS DATABASE
OFIS provides a platform for storing data of common interest to the associated organizations. The categories under which the data is made available are; stage and discharge at various sites of Mahanadi; rainfall in Mahanadi catchment; Hirakund reservoir data; daily flood situation covering damage, rescue and relief measures and forecasts/warning issued by IMD, CWC and the Water Resources Department.
