To monitor and curb illegal forest activities, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of the Philippines is soon going to launch a mobile application. The app is named as ‘SnapPlot’. A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has been signed by the department with Smart Communications Inc. and two other companies, the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF) and Wide-Out Workforces Inc., to launch the “SnapPlot” mobile app. The new app will enable users to click a picture of the activities they wish to monitor or report besides geo-tagging its location. The picture can then be uploaded on the website of SnapPlot and here it would be automatically plotted on a map. The pilot site for the project is the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape (UMRBPL). The SnapPlot will be used for six months to monitor the UMRPBL region. Besides this, the app will be used by PDRF to provide logistical support to the project and to carry out reforestation in UMRPBL. SnapPlot will be used by the department to carry out monitoring and enforcement activities. “SnapPlot will allow users to share valuable information that can help DENR enforce forestry laws effectively, and take necessary actions to help everyone living in and around the area in times of calamities”, said Mr. Ramon J. P. Paje, Secretary, DENR.
