GIS solutions have become an essential part of the IT infrastructure where a lot of information need to be delivered in graphical way related to a physical location on ground. Use of GIS enhances decision-making, improves analysis and thus provides better service internally and externally within organizations. A national level seminar on GIS was held at Chennai during which, Shri.V.S.Raghunathan, SIO Kerala delivered a lecture and presentation on Open GIS and interoperability. Ms.Mahalakshmi from NIC Chennai also delivered a lecture on MapServer, an open source GIS, using scripts. The seminar was sponsored by University Grants Commission and conducted by Department of Geography, School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Madras, Chennai.
