MAHARASHTRA; NOVEMBER: Use of computers in district treasury offices throughout the State of Maharashtra has increased the accuracy and efficiency of their operation, reports NIC(WR) from Pune. Computerization of treasuries is a project being monitored at the national level, and Maharashtra has earned the distinction of being the first state to fully implement the project.
Formerly, all the vouchers and challans were manually compiled at every district treasury office before the compiled accounts were sent to the directorate at Bombay or to the Accountant General's offices at Bombay and Nagpur every month. Compilation of the payment majorheads were computerized in December 1989, and the receipt majorheads in June 1990, said the report.
Computerization now enables the district treasury offices to capture the data from the vouchers/challans directly in the computers in which extensive on-line validation and consistency checks are carried out, added the report.
