A unique website called North American Fatigue Management Program (NAFMP) has been launched in Canada, designed to address the issue of fatigue and its management among drivers of commercial vehicles. The website is a collaborative effort between multiple stakeholder groups mainly comprising of Transport Canada and the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Other organizations that have teamed up for this initiative include Alberta Workers Compensation Board, Alberta Employment and Immigration, Alberta Transportation, Alberta Motor Transport Association Commission de la santé et de la sécurité du travail du Québec, Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec and the American Transportation Research Institute. The main objective of the website is to provide bus and truck drivers information on how to manage and reduce the driver fatigue for an enhanced road safety. The interactive website serves as a potent tool for increasing the awareness on various factors contributing towards fatigue and also focuses on various fatigue management technologies and strategies available. It also gives information on the screening of sleep disorders and their further treatment. In total, the website has ten learning modules furnishing information and best practices for fatigue management for people involved at all levels of motor carrier operations, drivers and their families. An Implementation Manual provides direction and support for the operation of NAFMP in an environment of carrier operations; a Learning Management System incorporates quizzes and module exams for an interactive online learning. Also, there is a unique Business Case and Return-On-Investment Calculator that provides complete assistance to carriers for calculating the cost and benefits of deployment of NAFMP.
