FROM THE MEET ON LAND RECORDS COMPUTERIZATION HELD AT NEW DELHI DURING MAY 29-30, 1992. While NIC's role in supporting the Ministry of Rural Development in computerizing land records up to the tehsil level is laudable and should be further promoted, the more important role of NIC during the Eight Five Year Plan would be in providing NICNET up to the tehsil level for enabling a large number of voluntary organizations to feed monitoring data up the hierarchy. --- Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission. It has convinced us that a setup like NICNET with nodal centres in several districts is essential, and all rural development information systems should knit around this infrastructure. This helps not only the maintainability, but also the economy of scale of operation. It is in this background that we are looking forward to the expansion of NICNET during the Eighth Five Year Plan to tehsil and subsequently to the block level...
