In an initiative of its own kind, the Italian Police has created the World's first “On line Police Station”. Through the website www.commissariatodips.it, citizens can avail the services cited below: ¡ Find general information. ¡ Download forms. ¡ Make an On line complaint about a computer crime or theft and loss. ¡ Receive advice. ¡ Interact with experts. ¡ Report conduct and events of illegal nature on the Net. The creation of an Online Police Station has not only lightened the workload of conventional police stations but is catering to the needs of the citizens in a time-saving and comfortable manner. After lodging a complaint online, the citizens can go to the police station and provide the officer in-charge with the reference number corresponding to the complaint. The complaint will then be printed and signed by both the complainant and the officer-in-charge. The public has given an exceptional response to this e-initiative. Over 10,000 reports about cyber crimes and 5,500 on line complaints substantiate the success of the Italian Police venture. To invite fair response from the users, an online questionnaire has been prepared that asks citizens to rate the services of the website. The On Line Police portal is engaging greater participation among the Police and the citizens. This in turn is helping the police to trace new forms of cyber crime like the theft of e-Bay accounts and their fraudulent use to swindle unknowing users, new telephone fraud methods, phoney job offers designed to capture applicants' personal details, sham notices of wins in the lottery cashable only after paying a sum of money, spreading viruses targeting the latest mobile phones, and so on. The Online Police Station project has been presented at Interpol head quarters within the European Working Party on Information Technology and received unanimous appreciation by European police forces. A model of the Online Police Station is being prepared in order to be proposed to police forces in the EU countries.
